LOVE NOTES: Performer Concept & Theme Guide

Love Notes is an intimate, story-driven variety show exploring love in all its forms — romantic, messy, funny, bittersweet, nostalgic, awkward, self-directed, and communal.

This show is not about perfection or spectacle alone. It is about expression, connection, and shared humanity.

The Vibe

Intimate, playful, and emotionally honest

Sometimes funny, sometimes tender

Cabaret-meets-talk-show energy

The audience is part of the experience

Think:

A late-night talk show

A community radio broadcast

A handwritten note you never meant anyone to read

The Format (What Makes This Show Different)

The studio will be staged lengthwise, creating a long, immersive performance space. A DJ and MC will host the show from a table styled like a talk-show or newscast desk.

Between select acts, hosts may:

  • Read anonymous audience love notes
  • Interview performers who have already performed
  • Share reflections or playful commentary
  • Not every act will be interrupted — hosting is used intentionally to support flow and transitions.

Variety Show Participation Requirement

All performers are expected to participate in the opening group act and finale group act, plus perform two additional acts (solo and/or group). This ensures balanced stage time, smooth pacing, and a cohesive show experience for both performers and audience members.

How Performers Should Think About Their Acts

Your piece can explore any interpretation of love, including (but not limited to):

  • Romantic or sensual love
  • Self-love or self-reclamation
  • Friendship, community, or chosen family
  • Unrequited love
  • Love that ended, changed, or never happened
  • Humor around dating, desire, or vulnerability
  • Love letters, unsent messages, or internal monologues
  • Funny is welcome. Vulnerable is welcome. Abstract is welcome.

This is not a competition and not a traditional recital. You do not need a “big moment” — honesty, intention, or storytelling is enough.

Audience Interaction & Performer Awareness

The audience may be invited to participate by throwing anonymous “love notes,” some of which may be read aloud during the show.

You will not be required to interact with the audience unless you choose to.

You may be invited for a brief on-stage mini interview after your performance (optional and low-pressure).

Tone & Boundaries

Perform within your own comfort and consent

Nudity or explicit content should align with studio policies

Emotional expression is encouraged — retraumatization is not required

You are never expected to disclose personal trauma

Final Note to Performers

Love Notes is about sharing space, not stealing it.

Come as you are.

Bring your humor, your heart, your awkwardness, your edge, your softness.

If your act feels like a love note — written, whispered, shouted, or unsent — it belongs here.
